Held annually, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, Family Volunteer Day is an opportunity for families to work together to serve their community. Family Volunteer Day is a national day of service presented by the Hands On Network and the Walt Disney Company. Volunteering as a family provides quality time for busy families and strengthens communication while having a positive impact on local communities across the country.

While there are a number of ways to get connected to volunteer opportunities, you should start by talking with your family — figure out what your common interests are and agree to find a project that will work for everyone. It may be easiest to write down project ideas and interests and vote, but remember to keep your list for the next time!

The Volunteer Center can help your family find a wide variety of projects with over 350 non-profit agencies in the Lehigh Valley, simply click here to visit our searchable database and enter your keywords and zip codes for a customized list of projects. Plan something on your own in your neighborhood — sometimes these projects can be the most meaningful, flexible, and have the greatest impact. Take your family idea list and see what can be done in your neighborhood or with your congregation, youth or civic groups. To get you started, we have some successful projects to consider. It really can be as easy as...

  • Bake cookies and visit a neighbor — someone you know will appreciate it
  • Clean out your cupboards, donate unopened, up-to-date food to a local food bank or the area supplier, Second Harvest
  • Move your cleaning from the kitchen to the closets! Find, sort, and donate outgrown winter jackets and clothes to a local shelter or the Salvation Army
  • Coordinate a neighborhood clean-up. A few garbage bags and gloves can go a long way and make a huge difference
  • Educate your neighbors on your local recycling program. You know how easy and important it is to sort the plastic, glass, newspapers and more - work together to create a schedule reminder for neighbors
  • Write cards and create seasonal decorations for a local senior center - visit the center to distribute and hang
  • The Volunteer Center is happy to help you get started on Family Volunteer Day. Please email us at youth@volunteerlv.org for any questions, and to let us know what your family will be doing! We’d love to see your pictures and share your successes with other families!
